An Introduction to Learning and History
People
In Canada, there are many different cultures that earn the country a multicultural reputation. A bigger one of those cultures is Chinese culture, giving Canada celebrations like Chinese new year.
History
In 1858 there was a gold rush in BC. The Canadian Pacific Railway was built between 1881-1885, and in those years over 15000 Chinese people came to Canada to live and work for the CPR. They came usually by boat, they took the route of Hong Kong to Vancouver. They first settled in British Columbia then later moved to Alberta.
The price of Chinese immigration was very big. First at 50 dollars to later 500 dollars, called Chinese Head Tax. Discrimination was another big hardship. Chinese people went to school in a separate one from white people. But, as more immigrants still kept coming, the Chinese culture in Canada kept growing. Today Chinese culture is normal in Canada and Canada has apologized for Head Tax. Adding on to Canada’s multicultural heritage, there are various Chinese restaurants scattered all over Canadian provinces, Chinatown, and places where Chinese people can celebrate their own culture.
